Sam Packer

Experience

Hi! I'm Sam. I've been writing software since 2013, and I'm now at Duke pursuing an M.Eng. in Artificial Intelligence. For my undergraduate degree, I did a B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems, and from there I've worked across the full stack: application code, cloud infrastructure, security, and compliance.

Everything on this page needed a different approach, and that shaped how I work. The combination is the unusual part: people with the business training to know who a product is for and whether its numbers work rarely ship production code, and engineers rarely go the other way. In the past year alone I migrated a production database, built a data platform from the ground up, shipped a machine learning service, ran a company's cloud identity, and managed another developer, and none of it felt like someone else's job. Machine learning is the newest layer and a real change of pace, since software is deterministic and ML is anything but. I can build the thing, understand the world it ships into, and talk with the people on every side of it.

Professional Experience

May 2026 - Present

Full-Stack Software Engineering Intern

Unlimited.ai, Austin, TX

May 2026 - Present

  • Built the company's data platform from the ground up as a Databricks lakehouse on serverless compute.
  • Designed medallion pipelines that ingest economic, market, and regulatory filing data on serverless jobs, with row-level validation and quarantine, self-healing backfills, and a fail-closed publish gate so incomplete data never reaches the application.
  • Migrated the production database from Azure PostgreSQL to Databricks Lakebase, bringing serverless Postgres, database branching for development and pull request previews, and synced tables that stream lakehouse data directly into the application.
  • Profiled and optimized the Next.js application, removing redundant per-request queries, parallelizing the heaviest financial calculations, and cleaning up noisy client-side error reporting.
  • Built a speculative precomputation layer for the most expensive analytics workflow, tracking how users move from inputs to results and computing likely answers in the background so they render instantly.

  • Built the company's data lakehouse in Azure Databricks and the streaming pipeline that feeds it, turning raw product activity into analytics-ready data.
  • Designed and built a Python machine learning service powering personalized career and college recommendations, with explainable results and versioned models.
  • Architected the organization's cloud identity and security in Microsoft Entra around passwordless access, eliminating long-lived credentials across the platform.
  • Set up automated preview environments so every change ships to an isolated, production-like deployment for review.
  • Implemented a tamper-evident audit system to meet education data privacy compliance requirements.
